|Blackstone has launched its social impact investing platform headed by Tanya Barnes, who served as the managing director of Goldman Sachs‘ Merchant Banking Division for 15 years. Further equipping Barnes for the role are her experiences running her own firm as well as managing Golden Seeds, an early-stage VC that invests in women-led companies.|
The social impact arm will work under Blackstone’s Strategic Partners business led by Verdun Perry to target mission-oriented investments in four areas: health and well-being, financial access, sustainable communities, and green technologies. One key strategy is to co-invest alongside managers wagering “socially conscious bets,” per Bloomberg.
The New York-based firm will join the growing ranks of PE mega firms creating positive impact funds, including Bain Capital, KKR and TPG Capital. The branches are alike in their goal of generating returns in environmentally and socially responsible ways.
